About this video

Escaping a foot lock in the 50/50 guard involves a transition to protect your leg and apply pressure to your opponent:

  1. When you're unable to finish a foot lock from the 50/50 guard and your opponent counters, place your toes on their hip.
  2. Shift your weight from one hip to the other and bring your knee down to the mat, being cautious of heel hooks if they are allowed in your rule set.
  3. To increase pressure and safeguard your leg, place your foot on your opponent's heel, mirroring their position.
  4. Ensure you're on your hip, squeezing your knees together for control.
  5. If your initial attack isn't successful and you need to defend your foot, post your toes on their hip.
  6. Push off to switch hips and rotate your opponent's belly towards the mat.
  7. Immediately stack one foot on top of the other, get a better angle on your hip, squeeze your knees, and finish the lock.
