Jin's relationship with judo predates her return to it and adds meaningful texture to her grappling identity. In 2023, she competed in judo as a green belt and earned a promotion to blue belt in the discipline. She then redirected her full attention to jiu-jitsu for approximately two years — roughly spanning 2024 to 2026 — before stepping back onto the judo mat for a local tournament circa early 2026.

Her return was deliberate and principled. Jin entered the tournament with a specific goal: to win every match by throw. The objective reflected genuine respect for judo as a discipline in its own right. She articulated this clearly, noting that she "really wanted to show that I actually did know some actual judo and that I wasn't just walking into the sport and not respecting it."

The Cross-Training Dividend

What Jin discovered through preparing for and competing in that tournament was that years of intensive BJJ training had quietly sharpened skills transferable across grappling contexts. She credited improvements in positional awareness and gripping instincts — not the same techniques, she was careful to note, but "the awareness of the possibilities" that elevated her overall grappling intelligence. Match Two: Accumulating Waza-Ari — and a Rules Lesson

The second match, against a judo blue belt and BJJ purple belt, unfolded as a more extended exchange. Jin repeatedly attacked with Seoi Nage, accumulating two waza-ari that combined for a full ippon victory. The bout also produced a brief rules discussion when Jin attempted a Bow-and-Arrow Choke from the turtle position — an instinctive reach for a BJJ tool that highlighted the boundary between the two rule sets. Match Three: Accepting the Call, Finishing Clean

The third match, against a judo brown belt, brought the sharpest illustration of that boundary. Jin landed a Seoi Nage and transitioned immediately into a Bow-and-Arrow Choke. Her opponent tapped, but protested the legality of the submission. After referee consultation, Jin received a shido for the choke. Rather than contesting the ruling, she accepted it, sought out her opponent directly, and apologized. "I went up to that girl, I shook her hand, and said sorry, and that was it," Jin recounted.
