Ashlee Funegra

Ashlee Funegra was born in November 2006 in California. Her path to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began not on her own initiative, but through a family commitment that would shape her entire athletic identity. In early 2014, her father Michael began training at Art Of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ), the academy founded and led by Guilherme Mendes and Rafael Mendes in Costa Mesa, California. Later that same year, Ashlee and her twin sister Mia Funegra joined the AOJ Kids Program together, stepping onto the mats for the first time at approximately seven years old. The shared entry into the sport transformed BJJ into a genuine family endeavor rather than an individual pursuit.

The Funegra household's involvement deepened further when their younger sister Natalee Funegra also joined the program, establishing the family as a multi-athlete BJJ household rooted entirely within the AOJ system. Ashlee's first competition took place in January 2015 — just months after beginning training — an early indicator of the competitive drive that would come to define her career.

Within the AOJ framework, Ashlee is regarded as part of the academy's second wave of homegrown Kids Program talent, a group that embodies Art Of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ)'s deliberate long-term athlete development philosophy. Juvenile Career

Ashlee Funegra's ascent through the belt ranks has been defined by consistent, emphatic performances at the sport's most prestigious IBJJF events. At the juvenile level, she established herself as one of the premier competitors in her division. In 2023, she captured gold at the IBJJF World Championships in both the weight and absolute divisions, and claimed No-Gi World titles in both 2022 and 2023 — sweeping weight and absolute on each occasion. Her juvenile résumé further includes Pan Championship titles in 2022 and 2023, along with podium finishes at the European Championship.

Adult Belt Progression

The transition to adult competition produced no slowdown. Competing at purple belt in 2024, Funegra claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship, the Pan Championship, and the European Championship — a sweep of the three major IBJJF gi events within a single calendar year. She also won the 2024 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship at brown belt, underscoring her dominance across both formats.

Carrying that momentum into 2025 as a brown belt, she continued her championship run at the Pan Championship and European Championship before arriving at the 2025 IBJJF World Championships.

Black Belt Promotion

It was at that event that one of the defining moments of her career took place. After competing at the 2025 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship as a brown belt and earning a podium finish, Guilherme Mendes promoted Ashlee to black belt in a ceremony held directly on the podium on May 29, 2025. The setting — at the World Championships itself, in front of the crowd that had witnessed her compete — underscored both the weight of the achievement and the depth of the coach-athlete relationship she has built with Mendes throughout her career.
