Josh Cisneros

Born on May 2, 2000, and raised in the Central Valley of California, Josh Cisneros grew up immersed in competitive sports. He dedicated twelve years to wrestling, reaching state-level competition at Selma High School — a grind that sharpened his physical intelligence and built the relentless pressure game that would later define his BJJ. Alongside wrestling, Cisneros trained boxing and Muay Thai throughout his childhood, assembling a well-rounded combat sports foundation that set him apart from peers his age.

The road to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ran through family. Cisneros' father had trained BJJ as a student of Royce Gracie in the late 1990s, giving the household a genuine connection to the art. When the family discovered Elite Team Visalia in Visalia, California, his father enrolled both Josh and his younger brother Jacob Cisneros without hesitation — Josh was twelve years old at the time. That single decision launched a family legacy: both brothers rose to become prominent figures in competitive BJJ, with the Cisneros name earning widespread recognition across the IBJJF circuit and beyond.

Building the Foundation

From his first class at Elite Team Visalia — an affiliate of the Cleber Jiu-Jitsu Association — Cisneros trained exclusively under Tom Knox, a professional skateboarder and black belt under Cleber Luciano. Knox guided him from white belt through black belt, a rare continuity of instruction that is evident in the cohesion and technical maturity of Cisneros' game.

For his first three years on the mats, Cisneros balanced BJJ with wrestling, competing in both sports simultaneously. At fifteen, he committed fully to jiu-jitsu — and the results followed quickly.

Colored Belt Dominance

Cisneros built a formidable competition record through the IBJJF colored belt circuit, establishing himself as one of the sport's most promising young competitors. His juvenile years produced back-to-back world championship gold medals in 2016, with titles at both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi. He carried that momentum through his purple and brown belt years, posting consistent results at the Pan Championship across both divisions.

His brown belt campaign stood as the most complete yet. Cisneros reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship, won the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi, and collected podium finishes at international events including the European Open and the Asian Open. That body of work earned him his black belt promotion from Tom Knox at the end of August 2020 — a milestone reached before his twenty-first birthday.

Immediate Impact at the Elite Level

Cisneros wasted no time making his presence felt at black belt. In 2020, he won both the IBJJF Pan Championship and the IBJJF American Nationals, announcing himself as a genuine threat in the Peso Pluma division (64 kg / 141.5 lbs) — one of the most fiercely contested weight classes in the sport. His wrestling-forged top game and sharp positional instincts translated seamlessly to the elite gi circuit.

No-Gi Consistency and ADCC Qualification

Cisneros proved equally effective without the gi. At the 2021 Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi IBJJF Championship, he advanced to the final, reinforcing his consistency across both formats. The no-gi arena, in particular, became a natural stage for his explosive wrestling base and pressure-driven top game to thrive.

The ADCC circuit further validated his standing among the world's elite grapplers. At the 2022 ADCC West Coast Trials, Cisneros reached the final and finished as runner-up, securing his qualification for the world stage. He converted that opportunity into hardware at ADCC World Championship 2024, claiming a bronze medal — one of the most prestigious achievements in submission grappling — and cementing his place among the top competitors on the global no-gi scene.
