Key principles
- · The leg must cross over the opponent's back with the hamstring pressing behind their shoulder to create a fulcrum for the shoulder lock.
- · Controlling the opponent's hips and preventing them from rolling forward is essential—use a belt grip, waistband grip, or overhook their far hip.
- · Sitting up tall and scooting your hips away from the opponent increases the rotational torque on the shoulder.
- · Keep the opponent's elbow pinned tight to your body so they cannot extract their arm or straighten it to relieve pressure.
- · When the opponent postures or stacks, transition to sweeps or the crucifix rather than forcing the submission.
Execution
- 1 From guard, control one of the opponent's arms (wrist or sleeve), swivel your hips perpendicular to them, and throw your leg over their back so your hamstring sits behind their trapped shoulder.
- 2 Use your hands to push off their hip or the mat to sit up, bringing your body beside and slightly in front of the opponent while keeping the leg heavy across their back.
- 3 Secure their waist by gripping their belt, waistband, or hooking their far hip to prevent the forward roll escape.
- 4 Scoot your hips away from the opponent, lean your torso forward toward the mat, and slowly apply downward pressure to finish the shoulder lock by driving their arm past their back.
Common mistakes
- × Failing to control the opponent's hips after sitting up, allowing them to roll forward and escape or reverse position.
- × Leaving too much space between your hip and the opponent's shoulder, which lets them pull their arm free before the lock is secured.
- × Lying flat on your back instead of sitting up and angling perpendicular, which removes all leverage and lets the opponent posture out easily.
