About this video
Executing the flower sweep to set up a triangle choke when unable to secure an overhook:
- Begin in closed guard with the goal of achieving an overhook, but if the opponent prevents it, prepare to initiate the flower sweep.
- Obtain a pocket grip on the opponent's sleeve with your left hand and grab the slack on their knee with your right hand. If there's no slack, perform a crunch to create it.
- Open your legs and position the leg on the sleeve side to block the opponent's hip, while the other leg goes on top of their back.
- As you attempt the flower sweep, the opponent will likely post their hand to prevent being swept. Allow them to post while preparing to transition to the triangle choke.
- Ensure the sleeve grip is in the middle of your stomach, not on your hip, to facilitate the triangle setup.
- As the opponent posts and starts to come back, punch the grip through and shoot your leg up to lock in the triangle choke.
- Keep your hand inside to secure the position and prevent the opponent from posturing up. Then, remove your hand and adjust the triangle choke.
- If the opponent's hand is slightly inside the triangle, it's still possible to finish the submission by locking your legs on top of their hand and squeezing for the tap.
- Timing is crucial; react appropriately when the opponent responds to the flower sweep to secure the triangle choke.
