Straight Ankle Lock

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The blade of your wrist must sit directly on the Achilles tendon, not on the calf or the heel.
  • · Pinch your knees together and clamp the trapped leg tightly to your chest to eliminate space and prevent foot extraction.
  • · The finish comes from arching your hips forward into the ankle while pulling the foot down with your grip, not from leaning back.
  • · Control the opponent's far hip with your outside foot (butterfly hook or on the hip) to prevent them from rolling or coming on top to relieve pressure.
  • · Anticipate the common escape of your opponent trying to boot or push your head away and turning toward you—maintain head position and leg clamp.

Execution

  1. 1 Secure the foot by wrapping your arm around the ankle so your radial bone (wrist blade) sits across the Achilles tendon, then clasp a gable grip or grab your own wrist.
  2. 2 Clamp the trapped leg tightly to your chest, squeezing your knees and elbows together to eliminate any slack.
  3. 3 Place your outside foot on the opponent's far hip as a frame to control distance and prevent them from closing the gap or stacking you.
  4. 4 Fall slightly to the choking-arm side, keep the foot glued to your chest, and bridge your hips explosively upward and forward into the Achilles tendon to finish.

Common mistakes

  • × Placing the wrist blade too high on the calf instead of directly on the Achilles tendon, which disperses pressure and allows the opponent to endure or escape.
  • × Leaning straight back without hip extension, which creates no breaking pressure and gives the opponent space to sit up and begin their escape.
  • × Failing to control the opponent's free leg or far hip, allowing them to turn into you, stack, and pass to a dominant position while relieving submission pressure.
