Calf Slicer

Submission
Also known as:
Calf-slicer Cloverleaf Clover Leaf

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · Your shin must be wedged deep behind the opponent's knee, acting as the fulcrum against their calf muscle.
  • · Closing the distance between their heel and their glute by folding their leg maximizes compression on the calf.
  • · Hip extension and arching backward dramatically increases finishing pressure.
  • · Control the opponent's hip or upper body to prevent them from spinning out or straightening the trapped leg.
  • · If they straighten the leg to relieve pressure, immediately transition to a kneebar.

Execution

  1. 1 From your entangled position, thread your shin perpendicular behind the opponent's knee crease so your shinbone sits deep across the back of their calf.
  2. 2 Secure control of their foot or ankle by trapping it under your armpit, lacing your arm over their shin, or using a figure-four grip on their leg to keep the heel pinned toward their glute.
  3. 3 Triangle or cross your legs to lock your shin in place and prevent the opponent from extracting their leg.
  4. 4 Extend your hips forward and arch your back while pulling their foot tightly toward their buttock to compress the calf against your shin.
  5. 5 If needed, add rotational pressure by turning your hips slightly to intensify the compression and finish the submission.

Common mistakes

  • × Placing the shin too shallow or too close to the ankle instead of deep in the knee crease, which removes the fulcrum and makes the submission ineffective.
  • × Failing to control the opponent's hips or upper body, allowing them to spin toward you and relieve all pressure.
  • × Relying only on arm strength to fold the leg without engaging hip extension, resulting in a weak finish that experienced opponents can endure.
