Kneebar Defense
Escape
Defending the kneebar: buy time by triangling the legs and hiding the knee line, then chase the attacker's hips so the leg can't be extended. The lock needs a straight leg and controlled hips — remove either and the kneebar dies.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · A bent knee can't be kneebarred — figure-four or clamp the legs to keep the angle
- · Chasing your hips toward their grip removes the extension the lock needs
- · Their control of your kneecap line decides the lock — slip it above their hip line to escape
Execution
- 1 Immediately triangle your free leg over the attacked one to prevent extension
- 2 Grip fight their hands to slow the finishing squeeze
- 3 Turn and drive your hips toward the attacker to slacken the leg
- 4 Slide the knee past their hip line and clear the entanglement
Common mistakes
- × Pulling the leg straight back, which does their extension for them
- × Staying flat and far — distance is what makes the kneebar finishable
Use it against
