Vanessa English was born on May 9, 1989, in King's Lynn, Norfolk, in the East of England. From a young age, she demonstrated a broad appetite for physical activity, cycling through swimming, football, squash, trampolining, and dancing without any single pursuit taking lasting hold. Each activity sparked genuine interest, but none commanded long-term commitment — a pattern of enthusiastic exploration and early departure that defined her relationship with sport throughout childhood and adolescence.

Martial arts entered her life at 16, beginning with Capoeira before transitioning into traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu, where she invested considerably more time than in earlier pursuits. Yet even there, the familiar pattern reasserted itself, and she moved on without staking a deep competitive identity in either discipline.

The turning point came in late 2009, when a friend's recommendation led English to her first Brazilian jiu-jitsu class. That friend was Patrick Martin, a blue belt under Braulio Estima, who co-ran a Gracie Barra branch in Derby alongside Steven Martin. The Derby academy operated under the broader influence of the Estima brothers — Braulio Estima and Victor Estima — and it was on those mats, under Pat and Steven Martin's guidance, that English took her first steps in BJJ.

What separated Brazilian jiu-jitsu from every pursuit Vanessa English had tried before was straightforward: she did not leave. For the first time, a sport held her completely. As her skill developed and her ambitions expanded, she relocated to Nottingham to train full-time under Victor Estima at Gracie Barra Nottingham, placing herself under one of the sport's most decorated and technically sophisticated coaches.

The demands English placed on herself were considerable. Throughout this period, she maintained a full-time career as a home carer, balancing the physical and emotional weight of that profession against a daily training schedule that would challenge even a full-time athlete. Her ability to sustain both commitments reflected a mental fortitude that became a defining characteristic of her competitive identity.

Progression through the belt ranks was swift. In under six years of training, English earned her black belt — a milestone reflecting both her natural aptitude and the quality of instruction she received. On June 7, 2015, Victor Estima conducted the promotion ceremony, formalising her standing among the United Kingdom's elite competitors. By that point, she had already established herself as a leading figure in British women's BJJ and had announced her capabilities to a global audience.

The year 2013 stands as the defining breakthrough of Vanessa English's competitive career and one of the more remarkable single-season performances in British BJJ history. Competing at purple belt, English completed what is widely regarded as a triple crown — winning three of the IBJJF's most prestigious events within the same calendar year.

She opened the year by claiming gold at the IBJJF European Open, then travelled to California and stood atop the podium at the IBJJF World Championship, the sport's most celebrated and fiercely contested title. She closed the sequence with gold at the IBJJF European No-Gi Open, completing a sweep of major IBJJF events that few competitors achieve at any belt level. Each tournament represented its own gauntlet of preparation and pressure; winning all three in succession placed English in rare company.

What lent the achievement additional weight was its context. English was not a full-time professional athlete in 2013. She trained daily while simultaneously working full-time as a home carer — a logistical and psychological challenge most competitors never face. The triple crown demonstrated not only technical excellence but an exceptional capacity for focus and resilience under constraint.

Following her black belt promotion in June 2015, Vanessa English continued to compete at the highest levels of the sport, translating the promise of her colored belt years into sustained success on the international circuit. Competing primarily in the featherweight (Peso Pena, 58.5 kg / 129.0 lbs) and super-featherweight (Peso Pluma, 53.5 kg / 118.0 lbs) divisions, she built a record that confirmed her place among the sport's elite women.

2017: Multi-Organisation Success

The 2017 campaign demonstrated English's range across multiple competitive organisations. She claimed the UAEJJF Grand Slam London title and won the IBJJF London Winter Open, while also advancing to the final of the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro, where she finished as runner-up.

2018: A Career-Defining Season

The 2018 season brought her most significant black belt results. At the 2018 IBJJF European Open, English claimed the gold medal, validating her standing at the top tier of the women's featherweight division on the European stage. Months later, at the 2018 IBJJF World Championship — the sport's pinnacle event — she earned a bronze medal, stepping onto the podium at the most competitive women's tournament in the world. Together, the European Open title and World Championship bronze placed 2018 alongside 2013 as the two most productive seasons of her competitive career, cementing her reputation as one of the top featherweight athletes in the sport.
