Dogbar
Submission
Also known as:
Dog Bar
The dogbar is a kneebar variation typically entered from the over-under pass position, where the attacker threads between the opponent's legs and catches the far leg for a hyperextension of the knee joint. It is commonly available when the passer's head is on the inside during an over-under pass attempt and the opponent defends by framing or creating distance.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The hips must be positioned above or directly over the opponent's kneeline to generate proper hyperextension leverage.
- · Pinching the knees tightly together around the trapped leg prevents the opponent from extracting or rotating their leg free.
- · The underhook arm transitions to control the attacked leg while the body drops perpendicular across it, securing a figure-four or overlapping grip near the ankle/foot.
- · Arching the hips forward into the knee joint while pulling the foot toward your chest creates the breaking pressure.
- · Anticipate the opponent trying to straighten their leg and scoot away by immediately clamping your legs and rolling to the correct side to maintain control.
Execution
- 1 From the over-under pass position with your head on the inside, identify the far leg and begin threading your underhook arm deeper around the thigh.
- 2 Drop your weight and swing your legs through, rotating your body perpendicular to the opponent's trapped leg while keeping it pinched tightly between your thighs.
- 3 Secure the opponent's foot and ankle against your chest with a figure-four grip or clasped hands, ensuring toes point toward your chin.
- 4 Squeeze your knees together to lock the leg in place, then bridge your hips forward into the knee joint while pulling the foot toward your chest to finish the kneebar.
Common mistakes
- × Failing to pinch the knees tightly allows the opponent to pull their leg free or rotate out before the submission is locked.
- × Positioning the hips too far below the kneeline results in calf pressure rather than true knee hyperextension, giving the opponent time to escape.
- × Neglecting to control the foot/ankle tightly against the chest lets the opponent boot-push free or turn their knee to relieve pressure.
