James Puopolo initially balanced his competitive grappling career with a full-time position as a middle school math teacher. After years of successfully managing both roles, he chose to fully commit himself to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coaching. This decision led to the founding of his own academy, Salem-Keizer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Oregon, where he currently serves as owner and head instructor.

Leveraging his academic background in mathematics, Puopolo adopts a cerebral and analytical approach to teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He systematically breaks down techniques, emphasizing precision, strategic thinking, and logical progression. This structured methodology has become a defining characteristic of his academy's curriculum, greatly benefiting students across all skill levels.

Puopolo is widely recognized for his expertise in leglocks, particularly his innovative "trap door" kneebar from the reverse De La Riva guard. To share his specialized knowledge globally, he has produced instructional content highlighting this signature technique. His contributions have significantly advanced leglock strategies within the broader Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.

Signature Technique: The "Trap Door" Kneebar

Puopolo's "trap door" kneebar is executed from the reverse De La Riva guard, strategically trapping the opponent's leg and smoothly transitioning into a powerful submission. This innovative approach exemplifies his analytical mindset and technical creativity.

As Oregon's first and only black belt World Champion, Puopolo achieved a historic milestone for the region. He actively utilizes this accomplishment to inspire and nurture local talent, significantly elevating Oregon's reputation within the international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. Puopolo maintains strong connections with his mentors, including Rafael Lovato Jr. and the Ribeiro brothers (Saulo Ribeiro and Xande Ribeiro), regularly hosting seminars and collaborative training sessions to enrich the local grappling scene.

Puopolo boasts an impressive competitive record in both ADCC and no-gi tournaments. He secured victories at the ADCC USA Trials twice, in 2009 and 2011, earning invitations to compete at the prestigious 2009 ADCC World Championship and 2011 ADCC World Championship. His gold medal performance at the 2013 IBJJF World Championship No-Gi further solidified his standing as an elite no-gi competitor. Although retired from international competition, Puopolo remains active in Masters-level events and continues coaching his students, maintaining competitive sharpness and leading by example.
