Gabriel Brod

Gabriel Brod was born on July 26, 1995, in Pelotas, a city in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Raised in a household shaped by motorsport, Brod was introduced to motorcycles at an early age through his father, a prominent figure in the local motocross circuit. By the age of 10, he was already competing in motocross events alongside his father, absorbing the discipline and competitive drive that would define his athletic career.

Despite his passion for motorsport, Brod struggled with his weight during childhood. As he entered his early teens, he made a deliberate decision to take up martial arts as a means of getting in shape. At 14, he joined a neighboring martial arts club and began training Muay Thai — a pursuit he sustained for nearly six years. During that period, Brod compiled an undefeated record across four amateur Muay Thai superfights, demonstrating the competitive instincts that would later carry him to the highest levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At 18, Gabriel Brod enlisted in the Brazilian Army, entering a chapter of his life defined by service and sacrifice. His military career proved far from routine. Brod participated in two pacification missions in Rio de Janeiro's most dangerous favelas and served on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti as part of the Blue Helmet squad — an experience for which he earned a military medal. These demanding postings cultivated a resilience and mental toughness that would become hallmarks of his athletic career.

It was during his time in the army that Brod first seriously considered competing in mixed martial arts. Seeking to complement his Muay Thai striking with grappling skills, he began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under coach Fabiano Indio. What started as a tactical addition to his combat sports toolkit gradually became a consuming passion. The technical depth and culture of jiu-jitsu ultimately eclipsed his MMA ambitions, and Brod committed to BJJ as his primary competitive discipline.

The transition demanded real sacrifice. At the time, Brod was in his second year of Nutrition studies at the Federal University of Pelotas. Convinced that jiu-jitsu was his calling, he vacated his university spot and redirected his full energy toward the sport — a calculated risk that would prove to be one of the defining decisions of his life.

In 2021, amid the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, Felipe Pena — widely known by his nickname Preguiça — launched the FP Golden Team project. Designed to identify and develop Brazil's most promising undiscovered talent in the lower belt divisions, the initiative offered a select group of athletes the rare opportunity to train full-time in a professional environment. The qualifier drew applicants from across the country, all competing for just ten coveted spots on the squad.

Gabriel Brod, a purple belt at the time, applied for the project and endured three grueling days of physical and technical testing. He was among the ten athletes who earned a place on the team — a remarkable achievement for a competitor who, prior to that selection, had never trained as a full-time athlete. Having secured his spot, Brod relocated from Pelotas to Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, to train under Felipe Pena at FP Gold Team.

The move marked a profound turning point. Under Pena's coaching, Brod's development accelerated sharply. He earned his brown belt directly from Felipe Pena, and on July 6, 2023, Pena promoted him to black belt in a ceremony that recognized both his technical evolution and his extraordinary competitive results at the colored belt levels. His ascent from purple belt qualifier to black belt in roughly two years stands as a testament to the transformative environment that FP Gold Team provides.

Gabriel Brod competes in the Peso Pesado division (94 kg / 207 lbs) and wasted no time establishing himself as a force at the black belt level. In the months following his promotion in mid-2023, he constructed one of the most productive debut seasons of any Brazilian black belt on the IBJJF circuit.

Gi Results

On the gi circuit, Brod claimed gold at the 2023 IBJJF São Paulo Open, the 2023 IBJJF Brasília Open, and the 2023 IBJJF Vitória Open, asserting his dominance across multiple regional stops in rapid succession.

No-Gi Results

Brod's no-gi performances were equally impressive. He won the 2023 IBJJF South American Championship No-Gi in the weight division and captured double gold — both weight and absolute — at the 2023 IBJJF Brasília Open No-Gi and the 2023 IBJJF Vitória Open No-Gi. He also added an absolute title at the 2023 IBJJF São Paulo Open No-Gi. His ability to dominate both weight and absolute categories speaks to his combination of athleticism, technique, and conditioning.

At the national level, Brod placed 3rd at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi in 2023 — a result that underscored his competitiveness against the deepest fields Brazil's circuit offers. Across all formats, Brod's black belt debut season confirmed that his rise through the colored belt ranks was the foundation of a career built for the long haul.

Long before earning his black belt, Gabriel Brod had already established himself as one of Brazil's most formidable colored belt competitors. His colored belt career reads as a steady crescendo of results at the sport's most prestigious events, placing him among the elite at every level he contested.

Purple Belt

At purple belt, Brod announced himself on the global stage by claiming gold at the 2022 IBJJF World Championship, one of the most celebrated and competitive events in the sport's calendar. That victory followed a 3rd-place finish at the same event in 2021, confirming that his first World Championship podium was a preview of things to come. On the domestic front, he also won the CBJJ South Brazil Championship at purple belt in 2022 and placed 2nd at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2021, demonstrating elite consistency across regional and national competition.

Brown Belt

Brod's brown belt campaign was equally distinguished. He reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship in both 2022 and 2023 — placing 3rd and 2nd respectively — narrowly missing back-to-back world titles across two consecutive belt levels. He also claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals at brown belt in 2023, validating his status as the top domestic competitor at that rank. His 3rd-place finish at the 2022 IBJJF World Championship No-Gi at brown belt further demonstrated a well-rounded skill set across both rule sets.
