PJ Barch grew up immersed in a family with deep wrestling traditions. From a young age, his father introduced him to obstacle courses and physical challenges designed to enhance body awareness and athleticism, laying the groundwork for a potential wrestling career. Although initially exploring other sports such as soccer and gymnastics, Barch fully committed to wrestling by the 5th grade. His dedication quickly translated into success, earning him All-American wrestling honors while competing for Sussex Central High School, notably excelling at prestigious tournaments like Beast of the East. He continued wrestling at a Division 1 university but departed after two years, marking the start of his transition into submission grappling.

Barch's journey into submission grappling began in earnest after relocating to Hawaii, where he discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under JD Penn at BJ Penn's academy. His passion intensified upon training with Nathan Orchard at 10th Planet Portland. Driven by a desire to refine his skills, Barch traveled internationally, including training stints at 10th Planet Stockholm. In 2015, he settled in San Diego, becoming a dedicated student of Richie Martinez. His rapid progression culminated in receiving his black belt from Martinez and Eddie Bravo in November 2016.

PJ Barch is renowned for seamlessly integrating his collegiate wrestling background with the submission-oriented techniques characteristic of the 10th Planet system. Unlike many teammates who emphasize guard-based attacks, Barch distinguishes himself through aggressive takedowns, relentless top pressure, and precise back takes leading to rear-naked chokes. His grappling style further evolved, earning recognition from Grappling Insider as "one of the sport's most dangerous leg lockers," highlighting his versatility and comprehensive submission threat.

Technical Strengths and Strategic Approach

Barch's tactical approach emphasizes positional dominance and relentless pressure. His wrestling foundation allows him to dictate the pace, consistently forcing opponents into defensive positions. His proficiency in leg entanglements complements his aggressive top game, making him a multifaceted threat in competition.

Demonstrating his innovative mindset, Barch successfully executed the rare "Junny Lock" submission—named after its creator Junny Ocasio—during the ADCC 2024. Applied from the 50/50 guard position, this technique enabled him to secure an armbar finish and claim the bronze medal. This achievement underscored Barch's adaptability and willingness to explore techniques beyond conventional grappling methods.

Transitioning from competitor to mentor, PJ Barch opened 10th Planet South Bay in Chula Vista, California, around 2022. His coaching journey began earlier, as he had already been leading a full grappling program by late 2018. Establishing his own academy marked a significant milestone, allowing him to build and guide his own team. Approximately one year after opening, Barch conducted his first major belt promotion ceremony, solidifying his role as a full-time head instructor and respected mentor within the grappling community.
