Renato Canuto

Renato Canuto was born on June 13, 1996, in São Vicente, a coastal city in São Paulo, Brazil. His martial arts journey began in childhood with judo, laying a strong foundation for his grappling skills. Around 2004, Renato transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of his father, Valdir "Tio Chico" Canuto, becoming the first student in his father's newly established kids' BJJ class. His natural talent quickly surfaced when he secured victory at the Campeonato Paulista shortly after starting his training, setting the stage for his future competitive ambitions.

Renato Canuto received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from his father, Valdir Canuto, in December 2016. Throughout his formative years, Canuto refined his technique by training extensively under renowned instructors such as Robert Drysdale, Rodrigo Cavaca, and Leonardo Vieira. His grappling style was notably shaped by elite athletes including Marcus Buchecha, Fernando Tererê, Charles do Bronx, and Alan Finfou. Additionally, Canuto meticulously studied and integrated techniques from top competitors like Leandro Lo, Rafael Mendes, Gilbert Durinho, the Miyao brothers, Keenan Cornelius, and Caio Terra.

Renato Canuto demonstrated exceptional adaptability by capturing Kasai Pro Grand Prix titles in two distinct weight divisions. In 2017, he claimed the 150 lbs title, and in 2018, he moved up to secure the 170 lbs championship. These achievements underscored his versatility and ability to successfully adapt his game plan across different weight classes.

Renato Canuto is widely recognized for his dynamic, explosive, and submission-focused grappling style. He consistently applies forward pressure, actively opposing stalling tactics and promoting action-packed matches. One of his most memorable performances occurred in 2021 at a Third Coast Grappling event, where he executed a spectacular flying armbar submission against former UFC contender Jake Shields. This highlight-reel finish further solidified Canuto's reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative grapplers of his generation.

In late 2024, following his headline victory over Oliver Taza at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 10, Renato Canuto announced his transition to professional mixed martial arts. His professional MMA debut is scheduled for April 25, 2025, at Tuff-N-Uff 143. While preparing for his MMA debut, Canuto continues competing actively in grappling events, maintaining his technical sharpness and competitive edge.

In August 2021, Renato Canuto and his wife, fellow world champion Raquel Canuto, opened Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu in Las Vegas, Nevada. The academy uniquely blends traditional, old-school grappling fundamentals with modern, innovative techniques, reflecting the couple's diverse competitive backgrounds. Renato and Raquel actively coach and mentor students at their academy, significantly contributing to the local and broader Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.
