Standing Rear Clinch
Position
The Standing Rear Clinch is a dominant control position where the attacker secures the opponent's torso from behind while both are standing. It is used to control an opponent who is turned away, setting up takedowns, back takes, and various submissions including chokes and shoulder locks.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Lock your hands tightly around the opponent's waist or chest using a Gable grip or body lock to prevent them from turning to face you.
- · Keep your chest glued to their back and your head tight against one side of their neck to avoid being struck with a backward headbutt.
- · Drop your hips low and maintain a wide base to prevent the opponent from peeling your hands or hip-tossing you.
- · Angle off slightly to one side rather than standing directly behind them, which gives you better leverage and transition options.
- · Anticipate the opponent grabbing your wrists to peel your grip — counter by switching grip levels or immediately transitioning to a submission setup.
Execution
- 1 Close the distance and circle to the opponent's back, securing a tight body lock around their waist with your hands clasped together.
- 2 Press your chest firmly into their back and position your head snug against one side of their neck, keeping your chin tucked.
- 3 Widen your stance and lower your hips to establish a stable base, preventing them from turning or throwing you.
- 4 Control their posture by squeezing your arms and adjusting grip height — higher for choke setups, lower for takedowns.
- 5 Transition offensively by climbing your grip to the neck for a rear naked choke, sliding an arm under the chin, or attacking a Kimura when they reach back to defend.
Common mistakes
- × Standing too upright with hips close to the opponent allows them to easily hip-toss or peel your grip and escape.
- × Clasping hands too low on the hips without head control gives the opponent space to turn in and face you, negating your positional advantage.
- × Keeping feet too narrow and square behind the opponent makes you vulnerable to being bumped off balance or reversed.
