From Refugee Roots to Cypriot Athlete: Early Life and Sporting Background

Eleftheria Christodoulou was born on October 16, 1995, in Larnaca, Cyprus, to parents who had fled the northern part of the island as refugees following the Turkish military invasion of 1974. Her upbringing was shaped by her family's resilience — a quality that would come to define her athletic career. From an early age, Christodoulou demonstrated an exceptional capacity for sport, competing across multiple disciplines within Cyprus' national circuit and establishing herself as a versatile and driven competitor.

A Martial Arts and Athletic Foundation

The sport that anchored her childhood was karate, where she trained in the Shotokan style and earned the rank of black belt — a distinction reflecting both technical discipline and deep commitment to martial arts. Between the ages of 14 and 17, she transitioned into competitive volleyball, developing a team-oriented dimension to her athletic profile. From ages 17 to 21, Christodoulou dedicated herself to Olympic weightlifting under the guidance of Cyprus' national Olympic weightlifting coach, building the physical foundation that would later serve her on the grappling mats.

In 2016, Christodoulou began studying architecture at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia — a chapter that would, unexpectedly, set her on the path to becoming one of her country's most accomplished grapplers.

Discovering Jiu-Jitsu: From Renzo Gracie Strovolos to Ukraine

During a university holiday in 2016, Eleftheria Christodoulou encountered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time, introduced to the sport by coach Panayiotis Melodias at Renzo Gracie Strovolos Academy. Seeking something fresh to complement her daily routine, she found in jiu-jitsu a discipline that resonated immediately with her competitive instincts and martial arts background. The sport rapidly became a central pillar of her lifestyle.

Relocating to Ukraine

So compelling was jiu-jitsu's pull that Christodoulou made the decisive choice to pause her architecture studies and pursue the sport at a higher level. She relocated to Kropyvnytskyi, a city in central Ukraine, joining the training team of coach Ievgen Skyrda, whose gym operated as an affiliate of ZR Team. The move represented a full commitment to competitive BJJ and exposed her to a rigorous training environment that accelerated her development. Training partner Venizelos Athinodorou played a meaningful role in shaping her game during this period, serving as a significant influence on her growth as a grappler.

Her time in Ukraine was disrupted by the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely curtailed her ability to compete and connect with the broader international BJJ circuit. Despite the difficult circumstances, Christodoulou continued training before ultimately returning to Cyprus by the end of 2021.

Founding ZR Team Larnaca and the Road to Black Belt

Upon returning to Larnaca, Eleftheria Christodoulou channeled the knowledge and experience gained abroad into building a jiu-jitsu community at home. Together with Louis Charalambous, she co-founded ZR Team Larnaca, establishing an official ZR Team presence in Cyprus and creating a dedicated training hub for local athletes. Her approach at ZR Team Larnaca reflects a multidisciplinary philosophy — training alongside Louis Charalambous while also working with judo coach Andreas Krassas and wrestling coach Orestis Leonides to develop a well-rounded competitive skill set.

A Decorated Colored Belt Career

By the time of her return, Christodoulou had already compiled a decorated résumé spanning blue, purple, and brown belt divisions, with victories at the IBJJF European Open and the IBJJF Pan Championship. Her performance at the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro — where she finished third at brown belt in 2021 — and her participation in ADCC-sanctioned tournaments demonstrated a competitive caliber that had long outpaced the conventions of amateur classification.

In November 2022, on the eve of the IBJJF European No-Gi Open in Rome, ZR Team Europe head coach Max Carvalho formally promoted Eleftheria Christodoulou to the rank of black belt — a recognition of a journey that had taken her from the karate dojos of Larnaca through Olympic weightlifting platforms, the grappling gyms of Ukraine, and back to her island as one of its most accomplished martial artists.

European No-Gi Dominance and Competitive Career at Black Belt

The night following her promotion in Rome delivered an immediate statement. At the 2022 IBJJF European No-Gi Open, Christodoulou captured double gold in what was simultaneously her black belt debut and only her 15th competitive appearance in the sport. The performance was a remarkable demonstration of competitive efficiency — a grappler with fewer than two dozen tournament appearances performing at the highest level of the sport.

Building to the Top

Earlier in 2022, Christodoulou had claimed victory at the ADCC European Trials, earning qualification for one of grappling's most prestigious no-gi championships and firmly announcing her arrival on the international submission wrestling scene. These black belt results were built upon a colored belt career of notable breadth: gold at the IBJJF European Open No-Gi at blue belt in 2017; gold at the IBJJF European Open in both the Gi (2019 and 2020) and No-Gi (2019) formats at purple belt; and gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship at brown belt in 2021. Christodoulou competes in the Peso Pesado division (79.3 kg / 174.8 lb).
