Headquarters Position
Position
Also known as:
Headquarters Control
Headquarters is a dominant top position where the passer kneels between the bottom player's legs with one knee inserted centrally, controlling both legs while maintaining an upright posture. It serves as a versatile passing hub that offers access to numerous guard passes, submissions, and leg attacks, making it one of the most important transitional control positions in the guard passing game.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · The central knee splits the opponent's guard, preventing them from establishing a closed or consolidated guard structure.
- · Hands control the opponent's knees or pants at the shin level, steering their legs to neutralize hip movement and frames.
- · Upright posture with hips forward maintains pressure and allows rapid directional changes for passing left or right.
- · Anticipate the bottom player's re-guard attempts by pinning at least one leg to the mat and cutting angles before they recover hip connection.
- · Weight distribution stays centered and mobile rather than committed to one side, preserving multiple attack options.
Execution
- 1 Insert your lead knee between the opponent's thighs while maintaining a kneeling base, keeping your hips heavy and squared toward them.
- 2 Grip both of the opponent's knees or pant legs at shin level, pushing one leg down toward the mat while steering the other to create asymmetry.
- 3 Maintain an upright torso with your chest forward and elbows tight, preventing the bottom player from establishing frames or grips on your upper body.
- 4 From this hub, read the opponent's reactions—choose to pass left or right, drop into leg attacks, or attack upper body submissions based on their defensive responses.
- 5 Keep constant forward pressure with your hips to deny space for guard recovery or deep half entries.
Common mistakes
- × Leaning too far forward over the opponent exposes you to guillotines and allows them to pull you into closed guard or deep half.
- × Failing to control at least one of the opponent's legs allows them to re-establish shin shields or butterfly hooks and recover guard.
- × Staying static in headquarters without choosing a passing direction gives the bottom player time to build frames, establish grips, and set up sweeps.
