Luccas Lira was born on January 11, 1998, in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil, and came of age within a broad sporting culture that built the physical and competitive foundation for his later career in jiu-jitsu. Throughout his youth, Lira engaged in an unusually wide range of disciplines — basketball, football (soccer), volleyball, beach volleyball, handball, tennis, judo, and swimming — developing a diverse athletic base without anchoring himself to any single pursuit. His brief exposure to judo offered a first glimpse into martial arts, though it never became a sustained practice.

In 2015, at the age of 17, Lira encountered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu entirely by chance. While training at his local weightlifting gym, he noticed BJJ classes being held in the same facility. Curiosity drew him to the mats, and that accidental proximity became the starting point of a competitive journey he had not anticipated. At the time, Lira harbored no aspirations of becoming a professional athlete — his motivation was simply a genuine interest in an unfamiliar discipline.

Lira's first instructor was Carlos Augusto — widely known as Zau — who coached him at Halavanca in Brazil. Zau played a pivotal role in sustaining Lira's enthusiasm during those formative early stages, helping transform casual curiosity into serious athletic commitment.

The next major turning point came during Lira's blue belt years, when he befriended an athlete from the Miami-based Fight Sports during a competition. That relationship led Lira to relocate to Miami and join Fight Sports' professional squad in the summer of 2019. Under head coach Roberto Abreu — known widely as Cyborg — Lira earned both his purple and brown belts during his time with the team between 2019 and 2023.

In the spring of 2023, Lira departed Fight Sports following a disagreement with Cyborg Abreu and joined Atos' Miami affiliate. Head instructor Leo D'Avila promoted him to black belt on June 16, 2023. Lira subsequently relocated to Atos' headquarters in San Diego, California, coming under the direction of head coach André Galvão. His belt trajectory — white and blue under Zau at Halavanca in Brazil, purple and brown under Cyborg at Fight Sports in Miami, and black under D'Avila at Atos — reflects a journey shaped as much by personal relationships and life decisions as by competitive ambition.

His earliest indication that a professional career was viable came at blue belt, when he claimed gold at the 2018 IBJJF South American Championship — a result that convinced him to commit fully to the sport.

The year 2019 proved transformative. Lira captured double gold at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship as a blue belt, a breakthrough performance that solidified his confidence in his own abilities. That same year, he added the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi title at blue belt, reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship in the gi, and earned recognition at the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Abu Dhabi — one of the most productive seasons of his colored belt career.

Purple and Brown Belt Validation

At purple belt, Lira continued his upward trajectory by winning the AJP Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2021. His brown belt years brought further proof of his elite potential. At the 2022 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship, competing as a brown belt, he earned a double bronze — one in his weight division and one in the open class. In 2023, he reached the podium at the IBJJF Pan Championship in the gi division as a brown belt, before capping his pre-black belt career with its most significant result: gold at the 2023 IBJJF World Championship, where he claimed the heavyweight division title to become the 2023 IBJJF brown belt world champion.

Alongside his tournament results, Lira competed in two ADCC Trials cycles during his colored belt years, reaching the quarterfinals in the first and advancing to the finals in the second — a progression that underlined the steady evolution of a no-gi game already well-suited to the sport's most demanding qualifier.

An Immediate Statement at Black Belt

Luccas Lira wasted no time making an impression at the black belt level. On July 25, 2023, he made his black belt debut at an IBJJF tournament in Orlando, Florida, competing in the super-heavyweight division. In a performance that immediately captured attention, Lira won both of his matches against the same opponent, finishing each contest with a heel hook — an unambiguous declaration of the submission-oriented competitor he intended to be.

Later that year, Lira claimed the IBJJF Black Belt Super-Heavy title and added a 2023 bronze medal at the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi to his growing black belt résumé. He also established himself on the ADCC Open circuit, winning the 2023 ADCC Florida Open and carrying that momentum into 2024 with back-to-back victories at the 2024 ADCC Dallas Open and the 2024 ADCC Orlando Open.
