Combat Base

Position

Combat base is a kneeling posture where one knee is up (foot flat on the mat) and the other knee is down, creating a stable asymmetric platform used primarily when passing guard or recovering from bottom attacks. It provides a strong base against sweeps while offering mobility to transition into passes, front headlock positions, and standing submissions.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The raised knee acts as a frame and shield against guard entries while the down knee provides a wide, stable foundation.
  • · Hips stay heavy and centered between both legs to resist being off-balanced in any direction.
  • · Hands control the opponent's hips, collar, or wrists to prevent them from establishing grips or re-closing guard.
  • · The raised foot must stay flat with toes pointed forward, not flared out, to allow explosive direction changes.
  • · Anticipate the opponent shooting their hips up for armbar or triangle by keeping elbows tight and posture upright.

Execution

  1. 1 From inside guard or after standing in base, drop one knee to the mat while posting the opposite foot flat on the ground at roughly a 90-degree angle.
  2. 2 Widen your base laterally so your down knee and posted foot create a stable triangle with your hips centered above them.
  3. 3 Establish inside control with your hands on the opponent's hips, biceps, or lapels to manage distance and prevent guard re-engagement.
  4. 4 Keep your spine straight and head up, driving your weight slightly forward through your chest to maintain pressure.
  5. 5 Use the posted leg to drive into passes or sprawl back to snap down into front headlock attacks like darce, anaconda, or guillotine variations.

Common mistakes

  • × Keeping the knees too close together, which creates a narrow base easily disrupted by any lateral sweep or hip bump.
  • × Leaning too far forward over the posted knee, which exposes you to guillotines and allows the opponent to snap you down or take your back.
  • × Letting the raised knee drift outward instead of keeping it between you and the opponent, opening a path for half guard or deep half entries.
