In October 2011, Zaruski walked through the doors of Scorpion, a mixed martial arts gym in Montevideo, with his sights set on becoming a cage fighter. The gym environment broadened his exposure to combat sports, and it was there that grappling captured his imagination in a way that striking never did. He began training jiu-jitsu under Andres Angelero, head coach of Tsunami Team in Uruguay — an affiliate of Ares BJJ — earning his blue and purple belts under Angelero's guidance.
The Move to Atos
As a purple belt, Zaruski made the pivotal decision to elevate his training by relocating to San Diego, California, to join Atos Jiu Jitsu headquarters and train under André Galvão. The move proved transformative in more ways than one. During his time at Atos, he had the opportunity to meet Frank Mir, the MMA fighter who had originally inspired him to pursue martial arts. In a conversation that would reshape his career, Mir advised him to set aside his MMA ambitions entirely and commit fully to jiu-jitsu — counsel that Zaruski took to heart.
What followed was a highly decorated career at the colored belt levels, built on consistent, submission-focused performances at the sport's highest stages. André Galvão recognized that development by promoting Zaruski to black belt in December 2022.
