Arm Triangle Choke

Submission
Also known as:
Kata Gatame Head and Arm Choke Arm Triangle

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The opponent's trapped arm must be driven across their centerline so their own shoulder compresses one side of the neck while your shoulder compresses the other.
  • · Eliminating space by sprawling your hips low and driving your choking shoulder into the neck is more important than squeezing with your arms.
  • · Walking your hips toward the trapped-arm side generates the angle needed to tighten the choke and cut off blood flow.
  • · Keep your head low and posted on the mat to add downward pressure and prevent the opponent from creating frames.
  • · Anticipate the opponent bridging toward you by shifting to a low side-control position on the trapped-arm side before finishing.

Execution

  1. 1 From mount or side control, use cross-face pressure or an underhook to force the opponent's arm across their face so their bicep is pressed against their neck.
  2. 2 Lock a palm-to-palm or gable grip around the head and trapped arm, positioning your choking-side shoulder tight against the exposed side of their neck.
  3. 3 Transition to the trapped-arm side, sprawling your hips out at roughly a 45-degree angle while keeping chest-to-chest pressure.
  4. 4 Squeeze your elbows together, drive your choking shoulder down into the neck, and walk your hips closer to tighten the triangle formed by your arms and their shoulder.
  5. 5 Hold the squeeze with steady pressure, keeping your head low and hips heavy, until the opponent taps or goes to sleep.

Common mistakes

  • × Leaving too much space between your chest and the opponent's chest, which allows them to re-frame, turn in, and escape before the choke sets in.
  • × Staying directly on top in mount instead of transitioning to the trapped-arm side, resulting in a squeeze that pressures the jaw but fails to choke.
  • × Gripping too high around the crown of the head rather than cupping the back of the skull, which lets the opponent slip their head out and relieve pressure.
