Americana Lock

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The figure-four grip creates a lever system where the wrist is pinned as a fulcrum and the elbow is lifted to attack the shoulder joint.
  • · Keeping heavy chest pressure prevents the opponent from turning into you or creating space to extract their arm.
  • · The trapped wrist must stay glued to the mat throughout the finish; the submission comes from sliding the elbow toward the head, not cranking upward.
  • · Anticipate the opponent straightening their arm to escape by being ready to transition to an armbar or switch to a straight armlock.

Execution

  1. 1 From mount or kesa gatame, use one hand to pin the opponent's wrist to the mat at or below shoulder level, thumb pointing toward their feet.
  2. 2 Thread your other hand under their elbow and grip your own wrist to form a figure-four lock, keeping your elbows tight to their body.
  3. 3 Drop your chest weight onto the opponent's trapped arm and face to eliminate bridging and hip escape attempts.
  4. 4 Maintain the wrist pinned firmly to the mat while slowly dragging their elbow upward toward their head in a paint-brush motion until the shoulder joint reaches its rotational limit and they tap.

Common mistakes

  • × Lifting the wrist off the mat during the finish, which relieves pressure on the shoulder and allows the opponent to slip the arm free.
  • × Sitting upright while applying the lock instead of maintaining chest pressure, giving the opponent space to bridge, bump, or escape.
  • × Applying the lock with the opponent's elbow too far above their shoulder line, reducing leverage and making the submission ineffective.
