Through Andrade, Márcio became affiliated with Nova Uniao (Bangú), one of Brazil's most storied jiu-jitsu organizations. That affiliation provided both the technical framework and the competitive identity that would carry him to the world stage. His emergence from Bangú became emblematic of jiu-jitsu's capacity for social transformation — a narrative he has since worked to replicate as a coach himself.

Márcio André's ascent through the colored belt ranks was swift and authoritative. He announced himself at the junior level by helping his team win the CBJJ Brazilian Juvenile Teams Championship in 2010, then claimed individual gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2011 as a blue belt — the opening chapter of one of the most consistent colored belt careers in modern IBJJF history.

At blue belt, he captured the IBJJF World Championship in 2011. At purple belt, he defended that title in both 2012 and 2013, added the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2013, and claimed IBJJF European Open gold that same year. He also won the Abu Dhabi Pro at purple belt in 2013, establishing an international profile well beyond the Brazilian circuit. In 2014, after claiming another IBJJF world title at brown belt, Fábio Andrade awarded him the black belt — a moment that formalized years of shared sacrifice and cemented the coach-athlete relationship that had been central to his development from the beginning.

Entering the black belt division placed Márcio André against the most accomplished featherweights in the sport's history. He competed against Cobrinha, Rafael Mendes, the Miyao brothers, Edwin Najmi, Renato Canuto, Bruno Malfacine, Lepri, and Langhi — a who's who of elite competition at 70 kilograms — and held his own against all of them across multiple seasons.

Breaking Through at the International Level

His black belt breakout came in 2015 and 2016. He claimed the IBJJF European Open in 2015, then added a second European title in 2016 alongside the Abu Dhabi Pro and the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi — his first no-gi world title at the senior black belt level. In 2019, Márcio André established the Márcio André Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Phoenix, Arizona, located at 14647 S. 50th Street, Suite B-105, Phoenix, AZ 85044. The academy represents both a professional venture and a personal statement — a deliberate effort to recreate in Arizona the kind of structured, mentorship-driven environment that Fábio Andrade built in Bangú.

Phoenix has become home in the fullest sense. Márcio's daughter was born there, and the city is where he has built his family life alongside his professional ambitions. The academy runs programs for children and adults, grounded in the same philosophy of technical rigor and competitive development that shaped his own path. His plan to bring training partners from his original gym in Bangú to Phoenix reflects a commitment to building a legitimate competition team from the ground up rather than relying solely on local talent.

The results have already been notable. In 2021, Márcio's student Mourece Ramirez became an IBJJF World Champion at purple belt — a milestone for the academy's competitive program and an early indicator of the coaching environment André has cultivated. The parallel to his own story is not lost on him: a coach in a small gym producing elite-level competitors, exactly as Andrade did in Bangú. André has gradually shifted emphasis from solely competing toward coaching and mentorship, while maintaining an elite competitive schedule — a balance that defines the current chapter of his career.

Márcio André holds a considered and somewhat contrarian position on the gi versus no-gi debate, one he articulated at length in an interview published in August 2026. His starting point is unifying rather than divisive: "I think it's the same sport. Jiu-jitsu is jiu-jitsu. That's how I was always taught, and that's how I see it." Within that framework, however, he argues firmly that the gi is the more technically demanding format and the more effective vehicle for developing precision.

The Role of Physicality in Technical Development

His core argument centers on the role of physicality. In the gi, athletes cannot compensate for technical gaps with strength — the grips and friction of the kimono expose every inefficiency. Without the gi, those gaps can be masked. As he put it: "In no-gi, because you can rely more on strength, you tend to use more strength. The more you rely on that physicality, the more limited you can become technically." He has extended this logic to belt-equivalence assessments, suggesting that a highly accomplished no-gi competitor might represent only a purple belt's level of technical development when placed in the gi — a claim he frames not as a slight but as directional logic: "It's not a matter of guesswork. On competitive trends, he observes that the majority of top submission grappling champions still train regularly in the gi, and he has noted a consistent performance gap between athletes who specialize exclusively in no-gi and those who maintain both formats. For youth development specifically, he is categorical: "I don't think children should train without the kimono. I think their technical development can drop significantly if they only train no-gi."
