Gustavo Batista

Born on March 11, 1996, in Florianópolis, Brazil, Gustavo Batista grew up in the neighboring city of Palhoça. Initially dedicated to soccer, he competed actively until 2012. At age 15, inspired by his older brother, Batista began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under instructor Felipe Teixeira, who awarded him his blue belt. This milestone solidified Batista's decision to pursue BJJ professionally.

Seeking advanced training opportunities, Batista relocated to São Paulo to join the renowned PSLPB (Projeto Social Lutando Pelo Bem) academy, led by Cícero Costha. There, he developed a close friendship and productive training partnership with Leandro Lo. When Lo departed PSLPB in September 2015 to establish the NS Brotherhood academy, Batista followed. Under Lo's mentorship, Batista progressed rapidly, earning his purple and brown belts and achieving the prestigious UAEJJF #1 brown belt ranking in 2017.

In January 2018, Batista transitioned to Atos Jiu-Jitsu in California, following his then-girlfriend Luiza Monteiro. Under the guidance of legendary competitor and coach André Galvão, Batista significantly refined his competitive style, becoming one of Galvão's standout students. Batista maintains a rigorous training schedule between Brazil and the United States, reflecting his dedication to remaining at the sport's elite level.

Initially recognized for his relentless knee-cut and half-guard passing, Batista deliberately evolved his style toward a more aggressive, submission-focused approach by 2024. He integrated leg-lock techniques into his arsenal, notably the belly-down straight ankle lock, which proved decisive in his victory at the 2024 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. During this championship run, Batista submitted three of his four opponents, clearly demonstrating his enhanced submission capabilities.

Batista's competitive career includes several memorable performances. In 2017, while still a brown belt, he notably defeated legendary competitor Alexandre Ribeiro in a mixed brown/black belt division. He has faced rising star Jansen Gomes multiple times, including a points loss at a 2023 BJJ Stars superfight and a decisive ankle lock submission victory in the final of the 2024 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Additionally, Batista captured the title at the 3rd Coast Grappling Kumite no-gi Grand Prix in 2020, underscoring his versatility across competition formats.

Although primarily known as a gi specialist, Batista actively expanded into no-gi and superfight competitions. His victory at the 3rd Coast Grappling Kumite Grand Prix in 2020 marked a significant achievement in no-gi grappling. Batista has also competed in superfight events such as BJJ Stars and pursued qualification for ADCC 2024 through the Brazilian Trials, highlighting his ambition to diversify his competitive résumé.

Batista is widely regarded as a model professional grappler, admired for his adaptability, consistent podium finishes, and technical evolution. His seamless transition between gi and no-gi formats, combined with his commitment to training internationally, positions him as a leading figure among the new generation of elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors.
