Alec Baulding was born on April 5, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia, where he grew up competing in traditional sports before seeking a more specialized athletic pursuit. In his mid-teens, that search led him first to taekwondo, where he competed at the orange belt level in an AAU tournament — a brief but telling introduction to the world of combat sports.

Not fully satisfied, Baulding turned to specialized combat sports websites in search of something more practical and complete. Brazilian jiu-jitsu appeared repeatedly, backed by consistent praise from practitioners and analysts. At 15, he signed up for his first BJJ class — a decision that would shape the entire arc of his athletic career.

With limited BJJ options available in Atlanta at the time, Baulding joined the academy of Robert Shaw — known as "Bull" — who held the distinction of being Romero Cavalcanti's first American black belt. After one year under Shaw, the academy closed, prompting Baulding to make a pivotal move: enrolling at the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Academy headquarters in Atlanta.

There, Baulding developed his game under Romero Cavalcanti — widely known as "Jacaré" and a legendary co-founder of Alliance. In 2012, he made an unexpected move to Team Lloyd Irvin, relocating to their headquarters in Camp Springs, Maryland. The stint proved short-lived, and he returned to Alliance in April 2013 to complete his journey under Jacaré. Every belt Baulding earned — from white through black — came from Romero Cavalcanti, with his black belt promotion taking place on June 20, 2015.

Baulding's ascent through the colored belt ranks established him as one of the most formidable competitors of his generation. At purple belt in 2010, he delivered one of the standout performances of his early career — capturing both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pan American Championship in the same year. The back-to-back titles announced him as a premier talent within the Alliance program and the broader competitive landscape.

His success carried into the brown belt division, where he reached the final of the IBJJF Pan American Championship on two separate occasions — in 2011 and again in 2015. He also claimed gold at the IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open at brown belt in 2015, reinforcing his consistency across both regional and international stages. The depth of his colored belt résumé stands as one of the most decorated in Alliance's storied history.

Immediate Impact and Domestic Titles

Baulding wasted no time establishing himself at the black belt level. Shortly after his June 2015 promotion, he won the IBJJF Dallas Open, signaling a seamless transition into the elite division. He followed that with a gold medal at the IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open in 2016, confirming his ability to compete at the highest level from the outset.

International Reach and No-Gi Credentials

His competitive footprint expanded internationally through 2016 and 2017. He earned a runner-up finish at the IBJJF Asian Open in 2016, then backed that up with a silver medal at the 2017 IBJJF European Open Championship. In 2017, Baulding claimed gold at the IBJJF London Fall Open in the gi while also reaching the final of the London Fall Open No-Gi — a double run that demonstrated versatility across both rulesets.
