At 15, Barral began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, initially drawn by an interest in MMA rather than grappling as an end in itself. For several years he pursued both disciplines in parallel, but BJJ gradually exerted a pull that outgrew his original intentions. As Barral has described it, the art effectively "chose him" — he discovered a natural aptitude and a deepening passion that taekwondo could no longer match. By age 19, he had stepped away from taekwondo entirely and committed himself exclusively to jiu-jitsu.

Barral's formal BJJ education began at Gracie Barra's Belo Horizonte academy under Cristiano 'Titi' Lazarinni, who was himself a purple belt under Vinicius Draculino Magalhaes at the time. Titi guided Barral from white belt through blue belt, which he earned at 17. Recognizing the limits of what he could offer a student of Barral's potential, Titi made a pivotal recommendation: that Barral train directly under Draculino to realize his full capabilities.

The transition proved transformative. Under Vinicius Draculino Magalhaes at Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte, Barral threw himself into the process with extraordinary commitment — attending up to five sessions per day, with Draculino present on the mats for every class. He also took on a role as assistant instructor, helping lead the early morning executive class.
