Vinicius Aieta's journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 1985, when he stepped onto the mats at age 17 under the instruction of Rilion Gracie. Training within the Gracie Humaitá tradition, Aieta committed fully to the art through the latter half of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, building a deep technical foundation under one of the Gracie family's most respected instructors. His development under Rilion Gracie continued uninterrupted until 1991, when Rilion relocated from Rio de Janeiro to Florianópolis, closing that formative chapter of his training.

Rather than allowing the transition to disrupt his progress, Aieta moved seamlessly to Royler Gracie, maintaining his roots within the same lineage. The partnership proved transformative. After years of dedicated work, Royler Gracie awarded Aieta his black belt at the end of 1995 — a formal recognition of his mastery and the culmination of a decade of continuous training. That milestone cemented Aieta's identity as a practitioner shaped entirely by the Gracie Humaitá tradition, a lineage that would go on to define his approach as both a competitor and a coach.

With his black belt secured, Aieta wasted no time proving his competitive worth. He captured the Rio de Janeiro State Championship in 1996 under the LERJJ, then followed with a silver medal at the Pan American Championship in 1998 under the CBJJ/IBJJF, establishing himself as a formidable presence in the Peso Pena (70kg–154lbs) division. Yet even as those results accumulated, Aieta had already made a defining choice: in 1996, the same year as his state title, he shifted his primary focus from personal competition to full-time coaching at Academia Gracie Tijuca.

Situated in Tijuca — a historically significant neighborhood in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro — the academy had passed through the guidance of several coaches before Aieta assumed long-term leadership. His arrival brought stability, direction, and a clear competitive vision. Central to that vision was a strong alliance with Saulo Ribeiro, a partnership that shaped the culture of the gym and elevated its standing within the broader BJJ landscape. As an affiliate of Gracie Humaitá, Academia Gracie Tijuca under Aieta's direction became a direct reflection of the technical and competitive values instilled in him throughout his own training.

Xande Ribeiro built upon that foundation, going on to become a dominant force in both gi and no-gi competition on the world stage. Alongside the Ribeiro siblings, Aieta guided Vinny Magalhaes through his formative years in Jiu-Jitsu — a grappler who later channeled his skills into a professional MMA career that included appearances in the UFC. Gustavo Correa and Fabricio Camoes, known in competitive circles by his nickname 'Morango,' round out a group of elite athletes who credit their foundational development to Aieta's coaching at Academia Gracie Tijuca.
