Jorge Britto

Jorge Britto was born on December 13, 1979, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — a city where martial arts and football competed equally for the imagination of its youth. In his early years, Britto gravitated toward the beautiful game, representing América Football Club under futsal rules and developing the competitive instincts that would later define his career on the mats. That sporting foundation eventually gave way to a deeper calling when, at the age of 13, he took his first steps into Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

His first instructor was Fernando 'Nutri-Baby' Silva, a black belt under the legendary Carlson Gracie, placing Britto within one of the most storied lineages in grappling history from day one. The early years of training were shaped not only by technical demands but also by personal hardship. Britto lost his father at a young age — an experience that deepened his bond with the coaches and mentors who followed. He came to regard them as family, and that emotional foundation infused his commitment to both the art and the community it offered.

As Britto's skills matured, he found a home at Gracie Tijuca, an affiliate of Gracie Humaitá in Rio de Janeiro, where he trained under two of the most respected figures in the sport: Vinicius Aieta and Saulo Ribeiro. The structured, high-level environment at Gracie Tijuca forged the technical and competitive foundation that would carry him through decades of elite grappling.

Colored Belt Competition Record

Britto's colored belt years were marked by consistent results on the Brazilian national circuit. At purple belt, he earned a second-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian National Teams Tournament in 2000. By brown belt, he had stepped firmly into the top of his division — winning the CBJJO Brazilian National Cup in 2003, placing second at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in both 2003 and 2004, and earning a third-place finish at the CBJJO World Cup in 2003. Together, these results painted a portrait of technical maturity and competitive consistency well before he reached the sport's highest rank.

On February 12, 2005, Saulo Ribeiro and Vinicius Aieta promoted Britto to black belt — recognizing a practitioner who had not only earned the rank through competition but had embodied the values of the art at every stage of his development.

Britto's journey took an international turn when he settled in Canada in 2007, formally relocating in May 2008 to represent the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Academy. The move opened a new chapter defined by sustained elite-level competition on the world stage while planting roots in the Canadian BJJ community.

IBJJF and ADCC Dominance

Competing in the Meio Pesado division (88.30 kg / 195.0 lbs), Britto wasted little time establishing himself as one of the most formidable Masters competitors on the IBJJF and ADCC circuits. In 2009, he claimed the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship at the Master 1 level and added a second-place finish at the same event, along with a Pans title at the Master 1 level. His ADCC Europe Championship victory in 2010 announced him as a world-class no-gi grappler well beyond the gi-focused IBJJF circuit. He returned to ADCC Europe in 2012 to claim third place, reaffirming his standing among the continent's elite.

The years that followed deepened his record further. In 2011, he repeated as IBJJF World No-Gi Champion at the Master 1 level. The 2015 season brought his most prestigious title when he captured the IBJJF World Masters Championship, complemented by a Pans gold at the Master 2 level. He added another Pans title at the Master 2 level in 2016, capping a black belt career defined by competitive longevity and a remarkable ability to perform across multiple formats, rule sets, and decades.

Britto's evolution from elite competitor to team leader took shape in October 2016, when he co-founded the Jiu-Jitsu For Life Team alongside Josh Rapport. The project represented more than a change of affiliation — it was a deliberate expression of the philosophy that had guided Britto's relationship with jiu-jitsu since his earliest days training in Rio de Janeiro.

The name itself carries weight. Jiu-Jitsu For Life signals a long-term, lifestyle-oriented approach to the martial art — one that extends beyond tournament results into personal growth, community, and identity. For Britto, whose own life had been shaped by the mentorship and belonging that jiu-jitsu provided during difficult personal circumstances, building that kind of environment for others was a natural extension of everything the art had given him.

The team stands as a cornerstone of his contribution to the Canadian BJJ landscape, reflecting his journey from a practitioner shaped by the great academies of Rio de Janeiro to a head instructor building something lasting in his adopted country.

Parallel to his decorated grappling career, Britto competed in mixed martial arts — adding another dimension to his identity as a combat sports athlete. His MMA journey ran alongside his IBJJF and ADCC commitments, reflecting the well-rounded martial arts background that has characterized his career throughout.
