His father, Jorge Popovitch, had long been a practitioner of the art, and the family's ties to the Gracie lineage ran deep — Pablo's aunt was married to Crolin Gracie. With the sport woven into the fabric of his upbringing, Jorge enrolled Pablo at just five years old. He trained at the academy in Barra da Tijuca that would later become Gracie Barra, developing his foundational skills under the guidance of Jean Jacques Machado and Carlos Soneca Machado.
