Their first encounter came in 1986 at the III Copa Company in the absolute division, with Rickson winning by exhaustion. Nearly a decade later, in 1995, the two met again in the absolute division, and Rickson secured victory by choke. The organization represented his most direct institutional intervention in the direction of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — a response to what he described as the systematic dilution of the art through sport-focused competition structures that rewarded positional management over genuine submission-seeking.

The Diagnosis of Modern BJJ

In a July 2014 interview with Jiu-Jitsu Style (Issue 22), Rickson traced the roots of his concern: as BJJ's popularity grew and brought larger tournaments, prize money, endorsements, and international opportunity, many academies had shifted focus primarily to the sport aspect. He argued that modern rules and the ability to scout opponents via the internet had made it possible to win through strategy rather than by being the better fighter. He coined the term "anti-jiu-jitsu" to describe stalling behaviors and positions that lacked a clear path to submission, citing the 50/50 guard as a primary example — a position he argued favored holding and timing a sweep for two points rather than advancing toward a finish. He estimated that roughly 8 out of 10 tournament matches at the time were boring due to stalling and the absence of submission attempts, and warned that athletes relying on such approaches would be lost in a cage or street context, where one must dynamically avoid strikes, throw, mount, take the back, or neutralize a threat.

The JJGF Rule Set and Organizational Vision

The JJGF's rule set at launch was described as more conservative than many had anticipated. Bravo had offered to help train Kron Gracie ahead of his MMA debut, and Rickson respectfully declined. Kron, a "California boy," came from a fundamentally different environment — one that required a different preparation and a different psychological approach to the same art. The acknowledgment reflected Rickson's understanding that the values of Gracie Jiu Jitsu must be transmitted not as rigid templates but as living principles adapted to circumstances.

In December 2024, Kron Gracie competed at UFC 310 against Bryce Mitchell. Rickson stated publicly that he would not be in Kron's corner for that bout — a decision that drew attention given the significance of Gracie family presence at major fights throughout the art's history. Kron lost the contest, but his continued presence at the highest levels of MMA competition reflects the trajectory his father spent years helping to shape.

In August 2021, Rickson Gracie released his autobiography Breathe: A Life in Flow, which became an instant New York Times bestseller. The memoir offers an intimate account of his life: the development of his father's art, the grief of losing Rockson Gracie, and the Invisible Jiu-Jitsu concepts that defined his approach to both combat and life itself.
