Felipe Mota

Felipe Mota was born on February 23, 1980, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in the vibrant Copacabana neighborhood — a district with deep roots in Brazilian jiu-jitsu history. Drawn to the mats at just four years old through the influence of his older brother, Mota's early exposure to the art proved formative, setting the course for a lifelong commitment to the sport.

His training began at the Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana, one of the most historically significant institutions in the development of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Under the Carlson Gracie system, Mota earned all of his junior belts, forging the technical foundation and competitive instincts that would define his career for decades to come.

As Mota advanced through the ranks, his journey took him through several academies and mentors, each contributing meaningfully to his development. Training under Alexandre Nielsen, he earned his blue and purple belts at Nielsen's academy — an experience that broadened his technical perspective and enriched his overall game.

Upon reaching purple belt, Mota transitioned to the Alliance Barra Academy — later known as Akxe Jiu Jitsu — where the most significant phase of his belt progression would unfold. Under the guidance of Vinicius Campelo and Octávio Couto, he advanced through brown belt and ultimately received his black belt in December 2006. The path from the Carlson Gracie mats in Copacabana to that final promotion spanned multiple academies and mentors, reflecting a career built on diverse experience and genuine competitive testing. Notably, just prior to his black belt promotion, Mota had already demonstrated elite-level ability on the world stage, earning a 2nd place finish at the World Championship in 2005 while competing at brown belt.

Felipe Mota's contribution to Brazilian jiu-jitsu extends far beyond his personal competitive record. In 2008, an invitation to lead a jiu-jitsu workshop in Norway opened the door to a more permanent commitment to the region. In August 2009, Mota formalized a partnership with a Norwegian academy, establishing himself as a full-time presence in the Scandinavian BJJ community.

Building a Legal Framework for the Sport

The environment Mota entered carried significant institutional challenges. At the time of his arrival, Brazilian jiu-jitsu lacked formal recognition as a sport by Norwegian authorities — a barrier that restricted the sport's ability to grow, secure funding, or operate within the country's established athletic infrastructure. Mota addressed this directly: in 2010, he successfully campaigned to register BJJ with the Norwegian sports federation, a landmark achievement that granted the sport formal legitimacy and opened the door to broader participation and development across Scandinavia.

This effort established Mota as one of the foremost pioneers of Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the region. Beyond the administrative work, he strengthened the connection between Norwegian practitioners and the global BJJ community by affiliating his academy with the Roger Gracie Academy, linking his students to the program of ten-time black belt world champion Roger Gracie.

Felipe Mota's competitive record reflects both the depth and longevity of his commitment to the sport. Competing across two weight divisions — Peso Médio (82kg) and Meio Pesado (88kg) — he demonstrated the versatility of a well-rounded technical game capable of adapting to different physical matchups.

Domestic Dominance

His most consistent success came on home soil, where he claimed gold at the Rio de Janeiro State Championship on seven separate occasions — a testament to sustained dominance over many years of competition. He also captured gold at the Rio Open in 2008, a notable early black belt title that confirmed his readiness to compete at the highest levels of the sport.

International Highlights

Mota's international career continued to produce results well into his later years as a black belt. In 2014, he won the World Pro Championship Trials in the United Kingdom, earning qualification for one of the sport's most prestigious events. The following year, 2015, proved to be among his most productive on the international circuit: he claimed gold at the Munich Open in both the weight and absolute categories — one of the most complete performances of his career — while also finishing as runner-up at the European No-Gi Open. Earlier in his career, he took 2nd place at the World Cup in 2007 and 3rd place at the 2009 European Open, rounding out a record that spans from pre-black belt competition in 2005 to international titles a full decade later.
