About this video

Executing a triangle choke counter to the lapel guard involves a series of strategic movements:

  1. When the opponent grabs your lapel, immediately insert your elbow inside your own lapel to remove slack and grab their sleeve. This prevents them from wrapping the lapel around your legs.
  2. Control the opponent's sleeve and prepare to set up the triangle choke, known as the 'dark pink triangle.'
  3. Disengage slightly to prompt the opponent to overreact and sit up, which creates an opening for the triangle setup.
  4. At the right moment, as the opponent sits up, grab their collar with your right hand on the same side as the sleeve you're controlling and pull them towards you.
  5. Jump through the opening, landing on your head past the opponent's body, while pulling them into the triangle position.
  6. As you fall, allow your leg to collapse, unlocking the triangle momentarily to adjust and tighten the choke.
  7. Once in position, turn your body slightly and squeeze your legs to finish the choke.

It's important to defend against the lapel guard early by controlling the slack and the opponent's sleeve. The technique relies on timing, using the opponent's reaction to set up the choke, and finishing with precise leg positioning and body movement.
