About this video
Executing a triangle when the opponent defends with a knee in the spider guard:
- Start in the spider guard and attempt the initial triangle setup.
- If the opponent places their knee in between to defend, it will be difficult to close the legs for a triangle.
- Open the guard and return to a regular spider guard position with the opponent's knee still in between.
- To set up the triangle, begin to scoot your hips to the side, removing one leg from the bicep and bringing your knee inside, similar to a scissor sweep motion.
- Exaggerate the knee movement slightly to create space and then shoot the leg through for the triangle.
- As you bring your knee inside, give a little push with your shin against the opponent's arm or body.
- When the opponent pushes back, slip your leg through and over their shoulder to lock the triangle.
- If the opponent's arm gets stuck inside the triangle, lift your hips and pull their arm across to adjust the triangle.
- Finally, secure the triangle by locking your legs and pulling down on the opponent's head for the submission.
