About this video
Executing a Kimura from the Kesa position:
- Start in the Kesa position and transition into a topside crucifix.
- Use the palm of the hand that has the underhook to cup the opponent's tricep.
- Drive the tip of your elbow into the opponent's sternum, mimicking a bicep curl motion. This will lift the opponent, exposing their back.
- Once the opponent is lifted, push their head down and secure the topside Kimura.
- For the Kimura grip, the outside arm goes in, grab the opponent's wrist and then grab your own wrist.
- Turn your body weight to apply the Kimura. The opponent's shoulder flexibility will determine how far you can turn.
- There are two ways to position your knees for control: both knees on the ground or one knee up against the opponent's shoulder blades. The latter restricts the opponent's shoulder movement, making the Kimura more effective.
- If the opponent defends the Kimura by holding onto something, instead of pulling up and pushing to the side, pull to the opposite side to break the grip and secure the Kimura.
