About this video

Here's how to execute the Top Side Crucifix from the Kesa Katami position:

  1. Start in the Kesa Katami position, ensuring a strong chest-to-chest connection and head control.
  2. Back away slightly, maintaining the pin.
  3. Prepare to transition into the cross-side crucifix, or topside crucifix. This is a dominant position where all your weight is on one arm, maintaining chest-to-chest connection and head control.
  4. Before transitioning, ensure you have a solid underhook and palm-to-palm shoulder pressure. This makes it difficult for your opponent to move.
  5. Take your back leg and cross it over your top leg. This is done by performing a windshield wiper motion and coming up to a knee-on-stomach position.
  6. From the Kesa Katami position, back away and drop your knee through the hole created by your opponent's arm and body. Maintain head control throughout.
  7. Switch your back leg to the front, transitioning into the topside crucifix position.
  8. In this position, you should have head control, arm control, and underhook control. This provides a strong control over your opponent.

This technique was notably used by Matt Hughes against BJ Penn in their second fight, demonstrating its effectiveness in a real-world scenario.
