About this video
From the kata katana position, the following steps are taken to execute a side triangle:
- Ensure your hips are off the ground and your toes are heavy and pointed downwards.
- Trace your hand to the collar of the opponent's wrist and drive it down to the ground.
- As you drive the wrist down, take your top knee and put it through the space created to trap and lock the opponent's arm on the ground.
- Ensure your bottom leg is away from the opponent to prevent them from attempting to transition into half guard.
- Keep control of the opponent's head to prevent them from moving it back towards you.
- Place your top hand between your heel and hamstring, then kick your leg straight to control the opponent's wrist.
- Transition back into the Kesa Gatame position, but with poor form to bait the opponent into attempting to sit up.
- As the opponent attempts to sit up, push their head in between your legs to secure the triangle position.
- From this position, you can finish with a triangle choke, Kimura, straight arm lock, or other submissions as desired.
If the opponent does not take the bait and keeps their head down, you can transition into an inverted arm lock:
- Cross face the opponent and use your body weight to lift their head off the ground.
- Ensure your palm is not cupping behind the opponent's shoulder as this can allow them to throw you off balance.
- Instead of placing your palm on the ground next to the opponent's head, try to touch the ground as far away from their head as possible.
- Once the opponent's head is off the ground, step over to secure the inverted triangle position.
- From this position, you can again finish with a triangle choke, Kimura, straight arm lock, or other submissions as desired.
