About this video

The Kuzure Kesa Gatame is a highly mobile position that exerts a lot of weight on the opponent. This technique is not performed in the traditional judo way, but rather with an underhook to prevent the opponent from taking your back. The following steps break down the technique:

  1. Start with an underhook Kesa-Katame. This is crucial to prevent the opponent from rolling and changing the position.
  2. Instead of pulling up, which can allow the opponent to roll, use an overhook and control the tricep, pulling up. This secures the opponent's arm.
  3. Next, focus on weight distribution. Instead of distributing your weight towards the ground, aim to have your chest and rib cage on top of the opponent's rib cage to exert weight.
  4. Head position is also important. Avoid positioning your head to the side or upwards as this can allow the opponent to roll you over or push you away. Instead, drive your head down.
  5. To exert maximum pressure, hold the opponent, drive your head down, and lift your weight off the ground. This ensures all your weight is on the opponent's one side rib cage.
  6. To increase discomfort for the opponent, use your head to push their head towards the other side. This position allows you to start attacking.
