About this video
Transitioning to a triangle choke from the De La Riva guard begins with a solid De La Riva hook and a flexed foot to prevent the opponent from easily escaping. The right foot should be placed on the opponent's hip, ready to extend and force them to post their hand on the mat to avoid falling.
- While extending the right leg, simultaneously pull down on the opponent's collar with the right hand to break their posture and keep them from stepping over into a Reverse De La Riva.
- Release the De La Riva hook and place the left foot on the opponent's hip.
- Lift the hips off the mat and swing the right leg around to initiate the triangle choke. Ensure the back of the knee is close to the side of the opponent's neck and maintain grip on the collar throughout the transition.
- Lock the triangle by bringing the shin to the back of the knee, eliminating any gaps that could allow for an escape.
- To finish the choke, lift the hips and bring the opponent's arm across their body. If the choke is not immediately effective, adjust by holding onto the shin before releasing the triangle.
- Step on the hip with the left foot, turn to face the opponent's ear, and re-lock the triangle. Pull down on the head to secure the finish.
Throughout the technique, maintaining a strong grip on the collar and ensuring proper foot placement are crucial for control and preventing the opponent from countering with a Reverse De La Riva.
