About this video

Transitioning from De La Riva to one-leg X-Guard involves controlling both of the opponent's sleeves. This is particularly useful against larger opponents to prevent them from gripping the pant legs and attempting guard passes. Maintain a flexed foot with the De La Riva hook and the opposite foot on the opponent's hip, managing the distance effectively.

  1. With the De La Riva hook in place, kick the opponent out with the foot on the hip and sit up.
  2. Dive the opponent's arm between their legs and reach underneath with the left hand to control their sleeve.
  3. Post the right hand on the mat and scoot hips to the right, bringing the left shin in front of the opponent's right shin to establish shin-to-shin contact.
  4. Maintain shin-to-shin contact to prevent the opponent from freeing their leg and passing the guard.
  5. Lean back and lift the shin, pulling the opponent over and transitioning into the one-leg X-Guard.
  6. Plant the foot on the opponent's hip, lift hips high, and control both pant legs, clamping down with the left arm and gripping the front of the pants with the right hand.
  7. Keep knees pinched together and hips elevated to prevent the opponent from escaping or passing.
  8. From this position, look for sweeps and advance to better positions, ensuring not to reap the leg to avoid disqualification in competition.

It is crucial to follow the opponent's leg movements with the shin and maintain a high hip position with knees pinched to secure the one-leg X-Guard and set up for sweeps.
