About this video
Transitioning to a toe hold when the opponent defends the Berimbolo by pushing on the chest:
- Start from the De La Riva guard, pull the opponent in, and bring their butt to the mat.
- As you begin to spin underneath for the Berimbolo, the opponent may push on your chest to create distance, making the Berimbolo difficult.
- Switch your focus to their foot on your chest, using your hand that was on the belt to scoop underneath and post it on the mat.
- Grab their foot with your hand and slide your left arm over in one motion to enter the toe hold position.
- For the toe hold, control over the toes with a Kimura grip, not just pinky to pinky toe, for a more effective submission.
- When applying the toe hold, look away from the opponent and lift your left elbow to disconnect their ankle from their knee and hip.
- Alternatively, control the foot with your thumb and pointer finger, squeezing on the ball of their foot, and apply the same finishing mechanics.
- Ensure your feet are positioned safely: one foot tucked and the other on the opposite side of the foot lock to prevent counter-attacks.
- Pinch your knees together to prevent the opponent from spinning out and to secure a tighter submission.
- Execute the toe hold by lifting your elbow, looking over your shoulder, and ensuring your knees are pinched for the finish.
