About this video
Executing a single leg takedown from the De La Riva guard involves a specific grip change and a series of movements to secure the leg. Begin by switching from collar to sleeve control, which is particularly important when facing larger opponents to prevent them from controlling your pant legs and passing the guard.
- Start with both sleeves controlled while in the De La Riva guard.
- Kick out the leg that is on the opponent's hip and transfer the grip from the right hand to the left hand underneath.
- Hook your right leg behind the opponent's leg while facing to the right.
- Stand up into the single leg position, ensuring your head is on the inside to avoid guillotine chokes.
- Once stable, clasp your hands together, palm to palm, and apply shoulder pressure.
- Execute the takedown by stepping forward with your right foot, then stepping back with your left, moving your head to the outside only at this moment.
- Drive the opponent down to the mat with your right shoulder against their quad.
- Immediately look to pass the guard, either by forcing a Reverse De La Riva or transitioning into a leg drag position.
It's crucial to maintain control of the opponent's leg throughout the takedown and to transition quickly into a passing sequence to capitalize on the advantageous position.
