Key principles
- · The first grip must be inserted palm-up as deep as possible, with knuckles pressing against the side of the neck behind the collar.
- · The second hand enters palm-down on the opposite collar, creating an X-shape where the wrists cross directly over the throat.
- · The finishing mechanic is a flaring of the elbows outward and downward while pulling the opponent's head toward you, not a pulling motion with the arms.
- · Keep your forehead close to the opponent's forehead or chest to prevent them from creating posture and stripping grips.
- · When the opponent defends by grabbing your wrists, maintain grip depth and use hip movement or transitions to break their defensive frames.
Execution
- 1 Open the opponent's collar with your first hand and insert it palm-up as deep as possible so your knuckles sit behind the collar against the side of their neck.
- 2 With the second hand, grip the opposite collar palm-down, sliding fingers deep inside so your wrists form an X directly at throat level.
- 3 Pull the opponent's weight down onto you or drive your weight into them to eliminate space and prevent posturing.
- 4 Finish by expanding both elbows outward and slightly downward while squeezing your forearms together against the carotid arteries.
- 5 If the opponent tucks their chin, angle your bottom forearm blade into the jawline to force the chin up and complete the choke.
Common mistakes
- × Inserting the first grip too shallow on the lapel, which prevents the forearm from reaching the carotid and turns the choke into an ineffective crush on the windpipe.
- × Trying to finish by squeezing the hands together rather than flaring the elbows outward, which lacks the leverage needed to close the arteries.
- × Reaching for the second grip before securing sufficient depth on the first, allowing the opponent to posture up and strip both grips.
