Bow And Arrow

Bow N Arrow

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The choking power comes from simultaneously pulling the collar toward you and pushing the opponent's leg away, creating opposing forces across the neck.
  • · Controlling the far leg (pants grip at the knee) prevents the opponent from turning into you and escaping.
  • · Falling to the side of your choking hand while extending your body maximizes leverage and tightens the choke.
  • · Keeping your back-control hooks engaged during setup prevents premature escape before the leg grip is secured.
  • · Anticipate the opponent defending by tucking their chin—pull the collar deep across the jawline so chin tucking only delays, not prevents, the finish.

Execution

  1. 1 From back control with a seatbelt or collar grip, secure a deep cross-collar grip with your top hand, feeding the lapel as deep behind the neck as possible.
  2. 2 With your free hand, reach over and grab the opponent's far knee or pants leg, controlling their lower body.
  3. 3 Release your hooks and pivot your body perpendicular to the opponent, falling toward the side of your choking hand while keeping the leg grip tight.
  4. 4 Extend your body by straightening your legs and pulling the collar grip toward your chest while pushing their trapped leg away with your arm, creating the bow-like stretch that cinches the choke.

Common mistakes

  • × Failing to get a deep enough initial collar grip results in a jaw crush rather than a clean choke, giving the opponent time to defend.
  • × Releasing hooks before securing the pants grip allows the opponent to turn and face you, killing the back position entirely.
  • × Staying flat on your back instead of falling to the choking-hand side reduces leverage and makes it easy for the opponent to stack and relieve pressure.
