Cassio Werneck

Cassio Werneck was born on February 17, 1974, in Brasilia, Brazil, the youngest of four children. His martial arts path began at age 11 with Capoeira, a discipline he practiced for four years before the pull of grappling arts took hold. In 1991, Werneck transitioned to Judo, training under sensei Miura and building a strong foundation in newaza — Judo's ground-work component — that would soon prove both a source of confidence and the catalyst for a life-changing encounter.

Werneck's first exposure to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came in 1992 through Professor Sardella, an instructor connected to the Federal Police in Brasilia who emphasized BJJ's self-defense applications. The moment that truly converted him to the art arrived in 1993, during a routine Judo session. A new training partner from Rio de Janeiro stepped onto the mat — a brown belt Werneck assumed was a fellow Judoka. Confident in his ground game after holding his own against other brown belts, Werneck invited him to grapple. Within five minutes, he had been submitted repeatedly. That training partner was Ricardo Reis, known throughout Brazil as "Tanque," and the experience left Werneck with no doubt about where his future lay.

Within days of that humbling encounter, Werneck began training BJJ full time under Ricardo Reis. He continued under Tanque's guidance without interruption until receiving his black belt in 1998 — a five-year commitment marked by total dedication and measurable results on the competition circuit.

As a brown belt, Werneck signaled his readiness for the elite level with back-to-back gold medals at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 1997 and 1998. He also earned silver at the IBJJF World Championship in 1997 and rounded out his colored belt career with a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 1998. His team lineage traces through BTT and Oswaldo Alves, a foundation from which he would later build his own association under the Cassio Werneck BJJ banner.

At the black belt level, Werneck established himself as one of the most consistent competitors of his generation, competing primarily in the Peso Medio (82kg/181lbs) and Meio-Pesado (88kg/194lbs) divisions across IBJJF and CBJJO events.

Peak Years and Landmark Achievements

2003 represented the apex of his competitive career. Werneck claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship, then followed it immediately with gold at the IBJJF Pan Championship — a rare and significant double in a single calendar year. The year prior, in 2002, he had taken first place at the CBJJO Brazilian Cup, signaling his ascent to the sport's top tier.

Sustained Elite-Level Consistency

Werneck carried that momentum into 2004, demonstrating remarkable resilience against the sport's best. He placed second at the IBJJF World Championship, second at the IBJJF Pan Championship, and second at the CBJJO World Championship — three runner-up finishes in a single year that underscored his sustained elite presence. Third-place results at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2000, 2001, and 2004, alongside a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 1999, further illustrate a career defined by longevity and competitive depth across multiple organizations.

Werneck's connection to the United States began in 1996, when he made his first visit to Sacramento, California. Together with Terry Maxwell, he co-founded an early training center in the city, leaving his brother Roberto in charge of day-to-day coaching when he returned to Brazil. Over the following years, Werneck made repeated trips back to Sacramento to compete, teach seminars, and support the school he had helped establish.

In 2003, Werneck accepted an invitation to take on a full-time coaching role at Kovar Karate in Sacramento, marking his permanent relocation to the United States. He later opened his own facility, Cassio Werneck BJJ, cementing his place in Sacramento's martial arts community. From those earliest visits through the founding of his own academy, Werneck has coached full time, building one of Sacramento's most recognized BJJ programs.

Alongside his grappling competition career, Werneck tested his skills in Mixed Martial Arts while based in the United States. He competed professionally and went undefeated across two bouts, winning both by submission — a record that speaks directly to the finishing ability he forged through years of high-level BJJ competition. Among his opponents was Tobi Imada, a well-regarded fighter whom Werneck faced under the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) banner. The MMA venture served as a clear demonstration that his submission game translated effectively against professional-level competition in a no-gi, full-contact environment.

Werneck's most enduring contribution to the sport may lie not in his own competitive record but in the practitioners he has shaped across decades of coaching in Sacramento. Since establishing himself in the United States, he has promoted numerous American black belts, including Adrian Saldana, Al Williams, Brad Sandoval, Toby Staley, Dan Goodwin, Derek DiManno, Gustavo Enriquez, Marcos Torregossa, and Zaid Mirza.

Each promotion represents a direct transmission of a lineage flowing from Ricardo Reis through BTT and Oswaldo Alves to Werneck himself — and now forward into a new generation of American practitioners. His coaching career reflects a long-term investment in the growth of BJJ in the United States, and his academy stands as one of Sacramento's most established links to the Brazilian grappling tradition.
