Did you know?
- Across 278 recorded matchups at the 2019 Pan, the submission rate was only 9 percent. That tells you most of these black belt matches came down to grips, position, and score rather than a finish.
- When someone did finish, the armbar led the way with 4 recorded submissions, ahead of the arm triangle choke at 2. If you want to close out a match at this level, the classics still do the work.
- The absolute final saw Lucas Barbosa beat Leandro Lo by split decision at 0x0 points. Nobody scored, and it still came down to the referees, which is about as tight as a final gets.
- The heavyweight final between Kaynan Duarte and Adam Wardzinski ended 2 points each, with Duarte taking it by 1 advantage. That is the kind of margin that decides titles when two elite guards cancel out.
- Gabi Garcia went 6 wins with 2 by submission on her return to the gi circuit here, matching Lucas Barbosa, who also had 6 wins and 2 submissions on record at the event.
