Eliot Kelly was born on February 15, 1984, in Illinois, USA. His upbringing was distinctly international, relocating to Malaysia in 1985, Japan in 1988, and finally settling in northern California in 1999. Initially passionate about basketball, Kelly shifted his athletic focus to wrestling after not making the basketball team in 8th grade. Despite significant setbacks—including a broken collarbone and reconstructive arm surgery—he persevered, demonstrating resilience and determination. By his senior year of high school, Kelly competed at the California State Championships and secured a 6th-place finish at the AAU National Championships. At UC Davis, although initially not selected for the wrestling team, he continued rigorous training and eventually competed in the Pac 10 championships, further refining his grappling foundation.

In the summer of 2008, while teaching English in Japan, Eliot Kelly discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Inspired by Grand Master Helio Gracie's longevity and instructional philosophy, Kelly began training under Márcio and Michel Miyashita in Shiga, Japan. Under their mentorship, he advanced methodically from white to brown belt, developing a technically sound and strategically versatile grappling style.

Upon returning to the United States, Eliot Kelly founded El Dorado Hills Jiu-Jitsu in California in 2009. Seeking advanced mentorship stateside, he trained under renowned instructor Marcos Torregrosa, who awarded him his black belt in November 2012. As head instructor at El Dorado Hills BJJ, Kelly integrates his Division I wrestling experience into the academy's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum, emphasizing takedown precision, positional control, and strategic grappling transitions.

Eliot Kelly is recognized for his cross-disciplinary approach, seamlessly blending wrestling fundamentals with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. He regularly organizes wrestling-and-grappling summer camps designed to enhance students' takedown proficiency and overall grappling effectiveness. His analytical teaching style, shaped by his academic background, emphasizes technical details, strategic application, and practical problem-solving on the mats.

In 2023, Eliot Kelly secured a position on Team USA's grappling squad by winning the national trials, subsequently representing the United States at the World Grappling Championships. He stands out as one of the few athletes over 40 consistently earning gold medals in IBJJF Masters division competitions. Kelly effectively balances his active competitive career with full-time coaching responsibilities, exemplifying sustained excellence, longevity, and dedication to the sport.

Eliot Kelly earned his Master's degree in Japanese pedagogy from San Francisco State University in 2015. Maintaining strong ties with Japan, he regularly returns to train, teach, and foster connections between the American and Japanese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu communities. His academic insights significantly inform his instructional methodology, blending scholarly analysis with practical martial arts experience to deliver clear, effective, and engaging instruction.
