Key principles
- · The choking hand wraps under the chin with the blade of the wrist pressing into one side of the neck while the trapped arm's shoulder compresses the other side.
- · Angling your body to the choking-arm side (perpendicular to opponent) dramatically increases finishing pressure by aligning your forearm across the throat.
- · Closing your elbows tight to your chest and curling your wrists inward creates a sealed clamp that prevents the opponent from posturing or pulling their head free.
- · Arching your hips into the opponent while pulling your hands toward your own chest generates the compression needed to finish.
- · Anticipate the opponent trying to stack or pass to the non-choking side by using a high guard or butterfly hook on the choking side to maintain the angle.
Execution
- 1 From front headlock or clinch, secure the opponent's head and one arm by threading your choking hand deep under their chin so your wrist blade sits against the neck, with their arm trapped inside.
- 2 Lock a palm-to-palm or Marcelotine grip (four-fingers-over) with your free hand, keeping elbows pinched tight to your torso.
- 3 Angle your body toward the choking-arm side so you are nearly perpendicular to the opponent, not square.
- 4 Pull guard or use butterfly/half guard to control distance, placing your choking-side leg as a hip-controlling hook.
- 5 Finish by driving your hips forward into the opponent while pulling your grip toward your own chest and curling your wrists inward, crunching their trapped shoulder into the far side of their neck.
Common mistakes
- × Staying square to the opponent instead of angling off to the choking side, which reduces leverage and allows them to stack and pass.
- × Gripping too shallow so the wrist sits on the chin or jaw rather than deep against the throat, resulting in a jaw-crushing crank instead of a choke.
- × Extending the arms away from the body to squeeze rather than keeping elbows tight and using hip extension, which wastes energy and opens space for escape.
