About this video
Defending against a guard pass in spider guard involves a counter armbar. When the opponent attempts to throw the leg to the side to pass, the following steps should be taken:
- Extend one leg and prepare for the opponent's attempt to toss the other leg to break the grip.
- Simultaneously extend your own leg and pull it off to break the opponent's grip, then immediately grab their tricep.
- Maintain the foot on the bicep to keep space as the opponent tries to come up and pass.
- Squeeze your knees together, trapping the opponent's arm in your armpit by squeezing your elbow to your side.
- Pinch your knees together at the opponent's elbow to secure the straight armbar, forcing them to tap.
- Grab the sleeves and extend one leg while transitioning to the other side, kicking your leg out to break the opponent's grip.
- Switch your hips back into position by pinching your knees together. Optionally, post your foot on the opponent's hip if it's close to their shoulder and arm.
- Ensure your thigh is in line with the opponent's elbow for the armbar to be effective.
- If needed, push the opponent's arm down and step to bring your hips up higher, but focus on squeezing and trapping their hand with your arm.
