About this video

Addressing the issue of an opponent obtaining an underhook and knee shield, the focus is on preventing their use for deep half or coming up on their knees, as well as stopping them from pushing away.

  1. When facing the knee shield, allow the opponent to place their knee while preventing them from getting too much on their side.
  2. Clamp down on the opponent and secure a grip on the pants with the thumb in, ensuring the grip is tight.
  3. Instead of driving the shoulder into the opponent's sternum, which is blocked by the knee shield, lock down their knee.
  4. Choose a comfortable grip that can be used quickly, aiming to push the opponent's knee down to the mat.
  5. Clear your own knee out of the way while maintaining the clamp down on the opponent.
  6. Lock your arm and use it to jump to the opposite side of the opponent's legs.
  7. After jumping over, keep the arm trapped and maintain the thumb-in pants grip.
  8. Hold the grip until you can switch your hips, secure a cross face, and establish side control with your knee touching and hand on the mat.
  9. If the opponent attempts to break the grip, use a grip orientation that makes it difficult for them to do so.
  10. Use the grip to create leverage and keep weight on the opponent to prevent them from following.
  11. If the opponent does follow, transition to an arm drag position and continue to secure side control.
